Devin Booker felt immediate concern for Deandre Ayton after seeing Hurricane Dorian ravage through his teammate’s homeland of the Bahamas.
“I actually reached out to him when it first happened,” Booker said.
Fundraising Event Held at Ocean 44
Weeks later, Booker and several of his Phoenix Suns teammates came out to an event to support Ayton’s continued effort as the 7-footer had a donation drive on a stormy Monday night at Ocean 44 seafood restaurant for hurricane relief.
“He told me he needed to do something about it, and he did,” Booker continued. “He said he already had something in mind. It’s a great event.”
Suns owner Robert Sarver, president and CEO Jason Rowley, and general manager James Jones attended the event to show their support. Suns players Kelly Oubre Jr., Mikal Bridges, Elie Okobo, and Booker also joined Ayton at the Scottsdale restaurant.
Restaurant Donates Proceeds to Hurricane Relief
Ocean 44 looked to donate the proceeds raised from food and alcohol sales of the first 250 dinners to UNICEF on behalf of the hurricane victims. The restaurant ended up writing a check for $37,040.25. Team owner Sarver also donated $10,000.
